Under the Hood: MediaStream Pipeline & Specifications
Show technical details
Hide
Video frames are captured directly via the native browser navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia API. Audio narration and system sound are routed through a real-time AudioContext and dynamically merged with a MediaStreamAudioDestinationNode.
When exporting as an Animated GIF, video keyframes are rasterised across an in-memory HTML5 Canvas and compiled via an optimised Octree colour quantiser. Audio extractions sample 32-bit floating point PCM streams and convert them to uncompressed 16-bit RIFF WAV or MPEG-1 Layer III MP3 via client-side LAME transcoding.
| Format | Encoding Type | Transcoding Speed | Recommended Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| WebM (.webm) | VP9 / VP8 + Opus | Instant (Zero wait) | High-framerate walkthroughs, YouTube, Discord |
| MP4 (.mp4) | H.264 / AVC + AAC | Instant | Universal presentation playback, Keynote, PowerPoint |
| GIF (.gif) | Animated Graphics | Frame rasterisation | GitHub pull requests, bug reproduction, documentation |
| MP3 (.mp3) | LAME Audio Layer III | Fast client PCM | Podcast recording, voice memo extraction, audio lectures |
| WAV (.wav) | 16-bit Linear PCM | Instant lossless | Studio audio mastering, sound design, transcription |
โ Frequently Asked Questions
How does client-side MP4 and GIF conversion work?
When MP4 is chosen in supported browsers, MediaRecorder records directly to an MP4 container. When converting to GIF, our in-browser engine samples frames from the recorded video element at specified intervals and builds an animated GIF file directly inside JavaScript memory.
Can I extract just the audio track from a long recording?
Yes. Select MP3 or Lossless WAV in the format dropdown. The audio channels are decoded from the recorded bitstream and exported as a standalone audio file, ideal for podcasting or transcription.
Is there any limit on how long I can record?
There are zero software restrictions or watermarks. Because recorded chunks accumulate in browser memory, you can record continuously for hours as long as your device has sufficient RAM available.
