Under the Hood: WebAssembly libheif Engine & Client-Side Transcoding
HEVC intra-frame decoding, 32-bit RGBA pixel buffer translation, and canvas rasterisation.
WebAssembly Transcoding Pipeline
Apple devices encode photos using High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC / H.265) intra-frame compression encapsulated in HEIF containers. Because standard web browsers cannot natively render HEIC directly inside standard <img> elements, BWTools utilises an in-browser WebAssembly port of libheif.
Pixel Buffer Allocation & Memory Isolation
The decoder translates raw binary byte buffers into uncompressed 32-bit RGBA pixel arrays directly within an isolated execution thread. HTML5 Canvas primitives then encode these pixel arrays into standard JPEG or PNG representations at the exact target quality specified, ensuring maximum performance with zero bandwidth waste.

โ Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Apple use HEIC by default instead of JPEG?
HEIC delivers roughly 50% better compression than legacy JPEG at identical visual quality, saving huge amounts of storage on iPhones. However, Windows PCs, older Androids, and many websites cannot open it natively without third-party converters.
Is there a limit on how many files I can convert at once?
There are no arbitrary server limits. Because processing runs on your local computer or phone hardware, you can convert dozens of photos at once. For very large batches (50+ photos), doing 15โ25 at a time ensures fast, smooth browser performance.
Are my converted files stored anywhere on your servers?
Never. BWTools has zero backend processing servers. Everything is decoded and converted inside your browser sandbox. Your photos and metadata never leave your computer.
Does converting from HEIC to JPEG lose photo quality?
At our default 90% quality setting, the output JPEG is visually indistinguishable from your original Apple photo. If you need 100% mathematical bit-for-bit lossless output, you can select PNG format.
